Allan Gould was
born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 22, 1944. He has been
married to Merle Benjamin since May 1968, and they have
two children: Judah, born in 1973, and Elisheva, born in
1978. He has lived in Toronto, Ontario, since his marriage.
Gould is a citizen of both nations.
Before Gould's move to Canada, he earned a Bachelor of Philosophy
from Wayne State University in Detroit, 1965, and a Master
of Arts degree from New York University Graduate School
of Arts and Sciences (Theatre), 1967. Gould received his
Doctor of Philosophy in 1977 from York University, Toronto,
with a thesis on the life and criticism of the renowned
Nathan
Cohen, Canada's finest critic.
Taking five years to complete, his Ph.D. involved interviewing
nearly one hundred people across the continent. It was later
published in abbreviation as a magazine piece in Toronto
Life, and won a National Magazine Award for Culture
in 1981.
While teaching theatre, theatre history, comedy, tragedy
and humanities for over a decade at York University, the
University of Toronto, Guelph University and the Ontario
College of Art, Gould wrote for and performed on over a
dozen national radio and television shows regularly. By
the early 1980s, he turned full-time to lectures and magazine
writing, and eventually, books of non-fiction, satire and
humour. In the 1990s, he initiated his ghostwriting and
speechwriting services for organizations and individuals
in Canada and the United States.
Since 1994, Allan Gould has turned primarily to co-authoring
business
books with prominent entrepreneurs, including the president
of Canada's most successful financial planning firm; the
creator of North America's largest moving company; the founder
of Canada's only mail-order pharmacy, and some of Canada's
top investment analysts.
Gould's research has taken him around the world, and produced
numerous best-selling books and award-winning magazine pieces.
He has appeared in the Canadian
Who's Who, published by the University Toronto Press,
from 1996 to the present.
